REAL ESTATE LAW- Junior Law Program

This course explores the legal framework governing real property ownership, use, transfer, and development in the United States. Real estate law intersects private rights with public regulation, making it foundational for transactional practice, litigation, and land use planning.

Topics include estates in land, title and conveyancing, mortgages and secured interests, landlord-tenant law, zoning and land use controls, real estate finance, commercial leasing, easements and covenants, environmental considerations, and real estate development processes. Students will examine how both common law doctrines and modern statutory schemes shape real estate transactions and disputes, while developing the skills necessary for drafting, negotiating, and litigating real estate matters.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand the various interests in real property and how they are created, transferred, and extinguished.

2. Analyze legal principles governing contracts for sale, deeds, title assurance, and land use.

3. Identify and apply rules regarding mortgages, foreclosures, and secured real estate finance.

4. Navigate the legal complexities of landlord-tenant relationships in residential and commercial contexts.

5. Evaluate the role of local, state, and federal regulation in shaping property rights.
