EMPLOYMENT LAW- Junior Law Program

This course provides an in-depth study of Employment Law, focusing on the legal rights and responsibilities that govern the employer–employee relationship. It examines common law doctrines, major federal statutes, state regulations, and emerging trends that affect how employment is structured, regulated, and litigated in the United States.

Students will explore topics such as employment-at-will, wrongful discharge, workplace discrimination and harassment, wage and hour laws, employee privacy, workplace safety, collective bargaining, and noncompete agreements. Emphasis will be placed on interpreting statutory language, understanding regulatory agency functions, and evaluating the broader social and economic policies underlying employment protections.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand and apply key legal doctrines and statutory frameworks governing employment relationships.

2. Analyze the interplay between federal and state employment protections.

3. Interpret the roles of administrative agencies such as the EEOC, DOL, OSHA, and NLRB in enforcing employment laws.

4. Identify unlawful employer conduct and employee rights under anti-discrimination, wage-and-hour, and whistleblower laws.

5. Evaluate the balance between employer interests (e.g., productivity, confidentiality, risk) and employee rights (e.g., privacy, fair compensation, equal treatment).

6. Analyze emerging legal issues in the gig economy, workplace surveillance, and post-pandemic employment models.
