CIVIL PROCEDURE- Junior Law Program

This course offers a comprehensive examination of civil litigation procedures in the United States federal court system. Focusing on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP), constitutional principles, statutory law, and key Supreme Court interpretations, the course traces the full life cycle of a lawsuit—from the initial filing to final judgment and post-trial relief.

Topics covered include subject matter and personal jurisdiction, venue, pleadings, motions, joinder, discovery, pretrial proceedings, trial processes, judgments, and doctrines of preclusion. Students will learn how procedural rules shape litigation strategy and access to justice, while developing the analytical skills necessary to navigate and critique procedural mechanisms.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Understand and apply the key principles of jurisdiction, venue, and notice in the federal courts.

2. Analyze the structure and purpose of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and related constitutional doctrines.

3. Evaluate procedural strategies from the perspective of both plaintiffs and defendants.

4. Interpret and critique seminal case law shaping civil procedure.

5. Assess the implications of pretrial processes, including pleadings and discovery.

6. Understand trial mechanics, judgment enforcement, and appellate review.
